Water delivery system evaluation in Jayakwadi command area- a case study
Abstract
In many irrigation systems throughout the world in- equitable and undependable distribution are also major water-management problems. Hence, there is a need of improvement in the structural and management com- ponent of the system. It is necessary to evaluate the contributions of every components to the overall per- formance of the system .Water-delivery-system design has traditionally focused on specifying the carrying and regulating capacity of delivery structures and on in- creasing water conveyance efficiency. The performance of a branch canal of Jayakwadi Irrigation Project was evaluated using different performance indicators.. e in- dicators viz. Adequacy (PA), equity (PE), Dependability (PD), Efficiency (PF), Deficiency (PDF) and Wastage (PW) were determined. Results indicated that for a particu- lar irrigation season and the system as a whole, the calculated performance of water delivery system was poor for adequacy and dependability whereas it was fair for efficiency. Hence the canal delivery system could not provide dependable water supply at right time and at right place matching the requirement of crops. The spatial and temporal dimensions of performance indicators showed that there is need to improve the performance with some modifications in the operation and management of canal delivery system.
